Morning Cuddles with Abby

I’m the dog mom to a fourteen-year-old puppy named Abby. When we adopted her four years ago, we were told she was a poodle–terrier mix. I recently had her DNA tested and learned she’s actually a blend of poodle, maltese, and chihuahua — and honestly, it makes perfect sense. Every bit of her personality suddenly clicked into place.

This morning, I woke up at my usual time, mind already turning toward the day ahead. Yesterday was stressful, so I was thinking through how to make today feel lighter, calmer. And then I looked over and saw Abby beside me, her sleepy eyes blinking up at me.

I rolled toward her and gave her gentle cuddles and scratches in all her favorite places. Dogs are the best stress relievers — they don’t even try; they just are. Watching her soak up the love I was giving her made my whole body soften. My breath slowed. My shoulders dropped. I felt better just being in her presence.

There’s something magical about the way dogs accept love so completely and offer comfort so effortlessly.
